Under the Director of Children and Young Adult Services, the Teacher of the Visually Impaired provides assessment and instruction in skills that enable visually impaired children to maximize their vision. This position requires the successful candidate to be able to  travel between Northeastern Ohio counties.

Responsibilities

  • Assesses the visual functioning level of each assigned student. 
  • In cooperation with the IEP team and the parents/guardian of a minor, develops IEP goals. 
  • Consults with school professionals in other fields when necessary to assess the student’s learning capabilities and service needs. 
  • Informs students, families, and interested parties of the merits and limitations of devices and technologies. 
  • Participates in regular staffing meetings, parent/teacher conferences and IEP meetings. 
  • Maintains case records and completes written reports regarding services and student progress as required. 
  • Performs functional low vision evaluations for referred clients, documenting and communicating findings through reports to referring eye care specialists, agencies and/or school systems. 
  • Provides support and instruction to teachers and therapists of students who are blind or visually impaired and parents, as needed. 
  • Assists with public education programs to expand community awareness about people with visual impairments. 
  • Performs other related duties upon request of the supervisor.

Required Skills and Experience

Minimum: 
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Teaching the Visually Impaired from an accredited university. 
  • Must possess or be eligible for licensure in the State of Ohio, Special Education or visual impairment licensure strongly preferred. 
  • Excellent verbal and written skills. 
  • Ability to work effectively with students who are visually impaired and/or have other disabilities. 
  • Ability to use best practice strategies and tools to assess students’ functioning and plan accordingly. 
  • Must be self-directed and able to multi-task 
  • Ability to work well under stress. 
  • Excellent teaching skills. 
  • Ability to work effectively in a variety of settings. 
  • Knowledge of and ability to use adaptive technology as it relates to student needs. 
  • Knowledge and use of various computer applications (Outlook, Microsoft Office, etc.) 
  • Must possess physical stamina to provide vision services as an itinerant instructor. 
  • Ability to drive to assigned locations is required.
