Responsibilities

1. Develop, plan and carry out recreation and leisure activities for groups and individuals participating in the Summer Youth Work Experience (SYWE) program. Activities will be in-house and community-based to reinforce the SYWE curriculum of developing independent living, mobility, travel, and social skills for young adults transitioning to college or work.   
2. Work with clients to assist them to develop individual and group recreation/activity goals and plans. 
3. Assist clients in gathering needed information and making plans and arrangements for recreation activities and events.  
4. Transport clients in agency vehicles.
5. Communicate SYWE recreation and leisure goals, plans and needs to other departments (transportation, etc).
6. Provide safe environment for clients, utilizing appropriate techniques and methods, sighted guide and other technologies. 
7. Learn and follow established safety practices.
8. Be positive, energetic and a team player; serve as peer role model for clients. 
9. Communicate verbally and in writing observations of and interactions with clients
10. Perform data entry, storeroom and equipment organization and inventory filing, record keeping, logs, statistics and reports as required.
11. Seek approval for program expenses & maintain receipts – follow agency procedures. 
12. Carry out the goals established in the client’s individual training plan in conjunction with department policies and procedures in order to promote the client’s maximum independent functioning with daily living skills, participation in community &/or work environments, and social/recreational activities.

Required Skills and Experience

Education: Bachelors Degree or Junior/Senior status in college with focus in therapeutic recreation, special education, social work or related field.

Experience: Minimum of one-year work experience in human services setting organizing individual and group activities and/or relevant college level coursework and experience with special needs populations.

Skills: Knowledge of recreation and leisure activities.  Ability to foster independence in clients. Ability to work with young adult clients who have blindness/vision impairments and other disabilities. Ability to relate to and motivate young adults.  Excellent interpersonal skills.  Computer literacy in Outlook, e-mail and Microsoft Office. Complete and pass a background check. Ability to adapt to fast-paced environment. Good verbal and written skills. Ability to work as team member. Ability to foster independence in clients. Ability to work on a team. Must have valid Ohio driver’s license in good standing.  Able to drive agency vans.

Physical:   Ability to stand, bend, stoop and reach in order to perform specific 
responsibilities. Able to lift 35 pounds. Assist clients with wheelchair transfers and other mobility-related assistance.  Ability to work varied hours, as required, including days, evenings and weekends. Scheduled work week may include up to forty (40) hours per week, including Sunday through Saturday, day and evening hours.  Arrive at the agreed time, ready to work.
